Pharmaceutical Collection Events to be held in the county PDF Print E-mail

The Armstrong County Board of Commissioners, the Armstrong County District Attorney’s Office, the Manor Township Board of Supervisors and the Parks Township Police Department are sponsoring “Pharmaceutical” Collection Events on October 29th   from 10 am – 2 pm at the following locations:

  • Hilltop Plaza Wal-Mart Parking Lot, Kittanning
  • Manor Township Municipal Building, 306 Byron Street, McGrann
  • Parks Township Police Department, 26 Jackson Street, North Vandergrift

 Items to be taken include:  prescription medications including controlled and non-controlled substances, non-prescription and over the counter medications and liquid products and creams in their own containers.

Mahoning Township improvement project is completed PDF Print E-mail

The Armstrong County Commissioners met today with Mahoning Township officials to view the recently completed improvements to Pheasant Farm Road. The improvement project consisted of the resurfacing of 2.5 miles of roadway.  The total project cost was $66,040 with $34,254 being provided by the Armstrong County Commissioners through the County Liquid Fuels program.  Mahoning Township was one of nine municipalities to share the $150,000 worth of funding awarded through the County Liquid Fuels program earlier this year.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is Observed in Armstrong County PDF Print E-mail

 Armstrong County Commissioners signed a proclamation supporting October 2011 as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Ms. JoEllen Bowman, Executive Director of HAVIN in Armstrong County attended the meeting to accept the proclamation.

 In the past year in Armstrong County, HAVIN provided more than 694 domestic violence victims and their significant others with counseling services.  Armstrong County’s HAVIN also provided shelter for more than 115 individuals totaling 3,268 days.

Ms. Bowman expressed her appreciation to the Board of Commissioners and members of the community for their continued support of HAVIN and the programs that they offer.  She stated that this year the focus for the month will be child abuse and the connection between children raised in a home with abuse and the continued abuse they administer / endure in adult relationships.  HAVIN hopes that by focusing on victims at a young age they can turn the dynamics around.  October 24, 2011 will be Community Awareness Day; Ms. Bowman will be the coordinator this year and announced that the week will be filled with activities throughout the community.

 She invited everyone to attend a fundraising event to be held October 22, 2011 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Kittanning Township Fire Hall.  The event is presented by EQT and will feature Pirates World Series Champions, Steve Blass 1971 and Grant Jackson 1979, along with Randy Grossman, a Steelers Superbowl Champ from 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979.  The fundraiser benefits HAVIN, Armstrong County Community Action Agency and Armstrong County Habitat for Humanity.  Each group retains 100% of the proceeds from each ticket they sell. To request tickets that will benefit HAVIN or for more information please call their office at 724-543-1180.    

Ms. Bowman also announced that HAVIN is selling chances to win 8 tickets, a parking pass and $250 cash to the Steelers vs. St. Louis Rams on December 24th at 1:00 pm.  Tickets are $10.00 and the winner is based on the PA lottery evening number of November 28th.

October has been proclaimed Dignity and Respect Month PDF Print E-mail

 The Armstrong County Board of Commissioners proclaimed October 2011 as Dignity & Respect Month in Armstrong County.  The campaign was started by the Center for Inclusion at UPMC in November of 2008 and introduced to UPMC employees in an effort to promote inclusion through behavioral and organizational change. 

The campaign has grown to include residents across the region, partnering with community leaders on efforts centered on multicultural awareness, workforce development and healthy communities.  A calendar of thirty tips of Dignity & Respect is available with highlights on how participants can incorporate acts of dignity and respect in everyday life. 

 If you are interested in taking the pledge, viewing the thirty tips or learning more information, please log onto www.dignityandrespect.org  or text RESPECT to 94253.  Over 60,000 people have taken the pledge.  What began as a work initiative to promote a culture of inclusion, dignity, and respect at UPMC, today is a movement promoting inclusion in the workplace, unison within the community and anti-bullying in schools.

Employ the Older Workers Week is Celebrated PDF Print E-mail

 On September 22nd, 2011 at the Public Meeting the Armstrong County Commissioners signed a proclamation adopting September 18 through 24, 2011 as Employ the Older Workers Week.  The Board of Commissioners recognized the workforce contributions of older workers, and encouraged employers and workers of all ages to recognize the many ways in which older employees contribute to a successful working environment.

 Ms. Debbie Reesman an Older Worker Employment Specialist with the Armstrong County Area Agency on Aging spoke at the meeting.  She praised the older workers for the wealth of knowledge and experience they bring to their jobs.  Ms. Reesman stated that the workers will be honored at a reception in October that will be attended by elected officials and employers.

Stop and Remember! Armstrong County Commissioners ask everyone to help honor heroes and victims PDF Print E-mail

 At the September 1st Public Meeting of the Armstrong County Commissioners a proclamation was signed asking everyone to stop and remember the heroes and victims of September 11th.  The Proclamation read as follows:

WHEREAS, In honor of the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we ask you to STOP AND REMEMBER; and

 WHEREAS, At 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 11th, 2011, all Americans are asked to cease all regular activity for one minute; and

 WHEREAS, as bells and sirens ring out, take a moment to honor the victims of the worst terrorist attack on United States soil; and

 WHEREAS, governments and businesses, houses of worship and railways, fire and police departments and others are called on to ring bells and sound sirens as we observe this Moment of Remembrance; and

WHEREAS, at the same time across the country 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, noon, Central Daylight Time, 11:00 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time and 10:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time – we call on you to reflect on the lives lost and those affected by the tragedies of 9/11; and

 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the members of the Armstrong County Board of Commissioners encourage the citizens of this county join their fellow Americans to recognize and remember the tragedy of September 11, 2011 and the lives that were lost or altered by the terroristic acts that day.

The Commissioners have asked everyone to participate in honoring those we have lost on that tragic day 10 years ago.

 
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder Awareness Week is Observed Across the State PDF Print E-mail

Armstrong County Commissioners signed a proclamation supporting September fourth to the 11th, 2011 as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Week.  The goal of the joint efforts by Armstrong – Indiana Mental Health / Mental Retardation and Armstrong – Indiana Drug & Alcohol Commission, Inc. is to raise awareness among its residents, especially women of childbearing age, regarding FASD education, prevention and intervention and to improve awareness.

 International FASD Day was first observed on September 9, 1999, so that the ninth day o the ninth month would always be a reminder that during the nine months of pregnancy a woman should abstain from alcohol.  Local restaurants will be displaying informative table tents and there will be a table staffed by members of ARC Manor at the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital on September 9th from 9am to 2pm.

Pennsylvania’s counties tackle tough issues facing their communities PDF Print E-mail

– County leaders from across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania gathered in Somerset County at the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) 125th Annual Conference today adopted 30 resolutions, adding or changing articles in the Pennsylvania County Platform (Platform), the official list of CCAP policy positions that guides the Association’s work in the public policy arena.
 Resolutions approved for inclusion in the Platform included such diverse topics as: pipelines and the enforcement of laws and operations; human services funding issues including county government’s first right of refusal when human services are privatized; the call for the commonwealth to undertake a review of human services funding formulas and the impact of those on counties; support for re-entry programs for prisons and juvenile detention facilities; allowing counties or their designee to assess fees for solid waste or recycling; and other resolutions.
   “County commissioners and their counterparts in home rule counties have been coming together for 125 years to discuss the issues they share in common and what is most important to those served by county government,” said Mark Hamilton, CCAP president and Tioga County commissioner.
   “The issues may change and shift over the years, but the importance of this Annual Conference and the role that it plays in helping counties come together to discuss the ever growing complexities of serving local families and our constituents, has not. The resolutions adopted today reflect county government’s position on policies that can greatly impact our ability to be effective advocates for our constituency.”
Hamilton further noted that the Association’s Platform would guide CCAP in the year ahead and beyond. He noted it would have a considerable role in the policy positions the Association takes on legislative matters and the policy positions it will advocate the General Assembly take on pending legislation affecting counties and Pennsylvania families.
“The Platform we adopted today is used by counties to lobby the state legislature about local community issues and the residents that are impacted by them,” he said. Counties are a primary service provider on behalf of the state, administering human services, judicial services, corrections, elections, emergency management and 911, planning, economic development and job training, record keeping and other programs.
In addition to policymaking, county officials elected leaders of the Association for 2012: elected president was Jo Ellen Litz, Lebanon County commissioner; Christian Leinbach, Berks county commissioner, first vice president; Pam Snyder, Greene County, second vice-president; and treasurer, Joseph Kantz, Snyder County commissioner. Their one-year term will begin in January 2012.
CCAP is the voice of county government, a statewide, nonprofit, nonpartisan Association representing all of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. CCAP membership includes the county commissioners, council members, county executives, administrators, chief clerks and solicitors.
CCAP strengthens the counties’ abilities to govern their own affairs and to improve the well-being and quality of life for every Pennsylvania resident. It advocates for favorable state and federal legislation, programs and policies on behalf of counties. CCAP is committed to service excellence through education, information, insurance, technology and other programs that support effective county government.
Founded in 1886, CCAP is an affiliate of the National Association of Counties. CCAP celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2011.

Residents are invited to share important historical sites PDF Print E-mail

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) invites Pennsylvanians to contribute their photographs of historic places to illustrate and promote the 2012–2017 Preservation Plan for Pennsylvania.

Through the “This is MY HISTORY” photo campaign, citizens can submit photographs of places that are significant to them and their community. Photo submissions can include archaeological excavations, historic or rural landscapes, downtown streetscapes, residential neighborhoods, and adaptive re-use of historic buildings and structures.

But success stories are not the whole picture, as contributors may also send photos of historic resources that have been lost to neglect or are slated for demolition.

Photos will be reviewed and shared at http://www.flickr.com/photos/patrailsofhistory/collections/72157627179319880/ . Photos can be submitted anytime through Dec. 31, 2011, however, only submissions received by Oct. 31 will be considered for inclusion in the commonwealth’s official preservation plan.

Every five years, PHMC’s Bureau for Historic Preservation is required by the National Park Service to develop a comprehensive preservation plan that:

  • Meets the preservation circumstances of the state;
  • Achieves broad-based public and professional involvement;
  • Takes into consideration issues affecting the broad spectrum of historic and cultural resources within the state;
  • Is based on the analyses of resource data and user needs; and
  • Encourages the consideration of historic preservation concerns within broader planning environments at federal, state and local levels.

PHMC has been holding public meetings throughout the state to gain public input in the process. The preservation plan will be released early in 2012.

Armstrong County's Household Hazardous Waste Event is a success! PDF Print E-mail

Over 19,560 pounds of household chemicals were collected at Armstrong County’s Household Hazardous Waste Event held in the Hilltop Plaza Parking Lot Saturday June 18th.  

The “Household Hazardous Waste” Event sponsored by the Armstrong County Board of Commissioners, the Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County, Zero Waste Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Resource Council and UPMC brought hazardous chemicals from 241 households from throughout the region.  

Special thanks go to the volunteers, ACMH, Foodland, Fox’s Pizza, Sheetz, Stiller Motorsports and Wal-Mart for their support and donations.
